From the Regents of the University to the Class of 2023

Dear Graduate,

One of the greatest honors for the University of Colorado Board of Regents, the institution’s governing board, is to be part of this commencement ceremony. Your success is a success for us all. Your degree is a measure not only of an accomplishment of dedication and talent, but also notice to the world that you have the skill and discipline to contribute greatly to any endeavor you pursue.

This commencement ceremony, like every University of Colorado graduation since 1935, will close with the reading of the Norlin Charge. As originally expressed by former CU President George Norlin in 1935, graduation “marks your initiation in the fullest sense of the fellowship of the University, as bearers of her torch, as centers of her influence, and as promoters of her spirit.” Welcome to the ranks of CU’s alumni family, which is over 475,000 strong. Congratulations on achieving this milestone. Well done and well earned!

Cordially,

The Regents of the University of Colorado

You’re now part of an extraordinary network of CU alumni making significant contributions to their communities, the state of Colorado, the nation and the world. As a fellow CU alum, I have experienced firsthand the transformative effects of a CU education. I know yours will serve you well, and enable you to serve others.

Among the many things you’ve learned during your time with us is the value of hard work, perseverance and self-awareness in achieving your goals. It will be among the most rewarding things you do in life, for yourself and others.

May 12, 2023

Welcome to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs commencement.

Today, the entire university community comes together in celebration of the achievements of the class of 2023, those who earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. We are pleased that family and friends who played an important role in your journey have joined us in celebration. Their physical presence today is as meaningful as has been their emotional and financial support to get to this milestone achievement.

Commencement ceremonies are steeped in tradition. As part of an exuberant procession of graduates marching into The BROADMOOR World Arena, you pass through a line of faculty and staff dressed in brightly colored regalia, receive degrees officially conferred by the University of Colorado Board of Regents, and seal completion with a handshake from the president or chancellor and provost or college dean.

As a campus community, we salute the accomplishments of your past, present and future. We expect the members of the class of 2023 to achieve great things personally and professionally and to make their mark on the world. We are confident UCCS has prepared you for the challenges inherent in a complex and fast-changing world.

The presence of the members of the University of Colorado Board of Regents, faculty, staff and alumni shows the pride of the university in you — its graduates. We are pleased to welcome you to the family of more than 57,000 UCCS alumni as you begin a new chapter in your lives.

This is your moment, graduates. Congratulations.

Respectfully,

Golden and Silver Graduates

In 2012, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs began a new Commencement tradition for two very special groups of alumni — our Golden and Silver Graduates. These alumni graduated 50 and 25 years ago, respectively, and helped build the foundation of what our university has become today. We are honored to recognize the classes of 1973 and 1998 at our 2023 Commencement ceremonies — Golden Graduates are recognized at the Spring ceremonies, and Silver Graduates are recognized during the Summer/Fall ceremony.

UCCS operated as an extension of the Boulder campus from 1965 - 1971. In 1975, UCCS graduates were finally recognized in Colorado Springs. So, these graduates today received their degrees from Boulder and participated in commencement exercises on the University of Colorado Boulder campus.

In 1997 a Colorado Springs community referendum merged the city-owned Beth-El College of Nursing, founded in 1904, with UCCS. Though not graduates of UCCS, we are pleased to include 1973 Golden Graduates of the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences in our tradition.

Dressed in gold regalia, alumni of the Class of 1973 will lead the 2023 graduates during the afternoon ceremony processional.

Student Achievement Award Recipients

In 2009, the UCCS administration decided to showcase a graduate as the main speaker during the Spring Commencement ceremonies. They chose to designate the speaker honor to the recipients of the Student Achievement Award.

The Student Achievement Award is an annual award that has been in existence since 1982. It is presented during the annual Campus Awards Ceremony to two students who have excelled in one or both of the following areas:

  • Made a significant personal accomplishment in conjunction with earning a degree (e.g., overcame a personal barrier, or undertook a special student research project)
  • Made a substantial contribution to the quality of student life at UCCS (e.g. served with a student organization, launched a new program or group)

This year’s speakers are:

Aja Zamundu (10:30 Ceremony)

Aja Zamundu headshot

Aja Zamundu is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She has received President’s List honors for every semester that attended at UCCS. She is a member of the Honors Psychology cohort, the National Society of Leadership and Success, the Undergraduate Research Academy, and serves as treasurer for the UCCS chapter of Psi Chi.

Aja has immersed herself in academic activities at UCCS. As a lead undergraduate research assistant to Dr. Littleton in the Lyda Hill Institute of for Human Resilience, her research as a member of the Undergraduate Research Academy earned her the Top Scholar Award at Mountain Lion Research Day. In addition to her work in the psychology department, Aja also has a deep interest in the humanities, and served as the teaching assistant to Dr. Kirsten Ortega in Poetry for the People class. She continues to collaborate with Dr. Ortega on Poetry as Life Practice, a project that aims to reform the creative writing curriculum for grade school students. Aja also served on the editing staff for the Riverrun Arts Journal.

Outside of her academic commitments at UCCS, Aja is an accomplished musician and performer. Her band, The Reminders, is a nationally and internationally acclaimed touring act with strong commitments to community service. As the mother of three children, she is passionate about youth advocacy and works with several community organizations to implement and support programs for the youth. She has been a featured speaker and musical guest for several organizations, including TedX, the Denver Non-Profit Convention, Boys and Girls Club of America, Citizens Project, Youth On Record, UC Health, Education Through Music, and the Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking.

This fall, Aja will pursue a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at UCCS. Her research will examine the relationship between trauma and creativity and explore representations of trauma in popular media. Her goal is to eventually obtain a PhD in Clinical Psychology and use her background in creativity to assist others navigating traumatic life experiences.

Seth Lindsey (2:30 Ceremony)

Seth Lindsey headshot

Seth Lindsey is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Performing Arts with an emphasis in Theatre and a minor in Leadership. Seth is involved on campus through the Chancellor’s Leadership Class; the Office of Admissions where he works as the School Group Coordinator; and his multi-faceted engagements with arts on campus such as serving as the Student Representative on the TheatreWorks Advisory Board.

Seth has created and collaborated extensively with the arts on campus. Over his four years, he has been part of 17 productions and served for two years as the Theatre Representative on the VAPA Chair’s Council—helping to organize the All Arts VAPA Festival. Through his minor and the Chancellor’s Leadership Class, Seth has also had the privilege of engaging in a variety of rewarding community service experiences. Not the least of which was his Leadership Capstone where he partnered with non-profit cancer organizations to raise funds and awareness about blood cancer. Being a cancer survivor himself, he is particularly proud of this aspect of his college journey.

A personal mantra for Seth has always been, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained” and he is glad to have taken risks and tried his hand at new opportunities during college. One of the most fulfilling pathways being with University Advancement as Seth has been increasingly involved with CU donor events as an emcee, most recently sharing his CU story at the annual Benson Society Gala in April.

The next act in Seth’s play with be working with El Pomar Foundation as part of their Fellowship program. He is elated to continue developing his skills as a leader and interacting with the non-profit sector in Colorado, right alongside his ongoing pursuit of refining his craft as a theatre-maker and artist.

Comprehensive Higher Education Program

In 2016, the Colorado legislature passed Senate Bill 196. This bill established a pilot program to develop opportunities for inclusive higher education for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our state. UCCS was one of the institutions given the opportunity to develop a pilot program because of our reputation for excellence and the expertise of the professors and staff in our college of education. The UCCS program is fully established and on-going within our College of Education. Students with disabilities who completed the 54-credit course of study program this spring will be recognized during the afternoon ceremony.

UCCS and Hewlett Packard Origin Recognition

David Packard and the companies that were created through his partnership with Bill Hewlett, were recognized for the role they played in the creation of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs campus back in 1965. Through Mr. Packard’s fondness for his hometown of Pueblo and the potential that he believed Colorado Springs held, he created the first non-California locations of Hewlett Packard – the company that went on to launch prominent global giants Agilent Technologies and Keysight Technologies who have significant operations in Colorado Springs. To give his new Colorado employees a place to pursue their higher education degrees, he heartily requested and endorsed the creation of UCCS as a fully independent campus of the University of Colorado.

FOR YOUR SAFETY

UCCS has taken every possible measure to ensure the safety of our graduates, their families, and their friends during our Commencement Exercises. You can do your part by noting the following:

  • Once you are seated in The BROADMOOR World Arena, locate the nearest exit to your seat.
  • In the event an evacuation takes place during the ceremony, we recommend your party have a pre-determined location outside the facility to aid in reunification.
  • Treat all alarms as real.
  • Listen carefully and follow any instructions which may be issued by the master of ceremonies, chief of police, fire chief, or other public authority.
  • Parents should keep their young children with them at all times.
  • Pay particular attention to the safety of any elderly persons or persons with disabilities.
  • If directed to evacuate The BROADMOOR World Arena, please move away from the arena and remain outside until you have been given an “all-clear” by a public authority.
  • If necessary, seek assistance from a UCCS staff member, BROADMOOR World Arena employee, or a uniformed police officer.

Thank you, and congratulations to our graduates!
